Why Is Retinol Important?

Oct. 12, 2024

Retinol Is a Great Addition to Most Skincare Regimens!

Retinol accelerates the metabolism of dead skin cells, contributing to a more youthful skin appearance. It’s beneficial for aging skin and all other skin types as well.

As we age, our skin cell turnover slows down, and the process takes progressively longer the older that we get. This is why our skin can appear dull and in need of exfoliation.

By incorporating a retinol product into your regimen, you will start to see brighter more youthful looking skin

Why Retinol Is Important?

Retinol can be good for your skin because it can:

  • Exfoliate Retinol increases skin cell turnover, which exfoliates the skin and unclogs pores. This can help treat acne and prevent future breakouts.
  • Increase collagen production Retinol increases the production of collagen, a protein that gives skin its firmness and elasticity. This can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Reduce dark spots Retinol can help reduce the overproduction of melanin, which can improve dark spots and even out skin tone.
  • Improve skin barrier Retinol can help improve the skin barrier, which protects the body from the outside.

Retinol is available in the form of oils, creams, and serums. It can be beneficial for almost everyone, but it’s not recommended for people who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant. Retinol can be harsh on the skin, causing redness, scaling, and flaking. To reduce irritation, you can apply retinol at night or 30 minutes after cleansing your face. You should also wear sunscreen and avoid direct sunlight.

Retinol is also known as vitamin A1. It’s available in food, as a dietary supplement, and in skincare products. The American Academy of Dermatology Association recommends starting to use retinol in your twenties to help combat the slowing of skin cell turnover.

*Do Not Use If Pregnant Or Breastfeeding *

How to Use Retinol

Here are some tips for using retinol:

  • Cleanse: Use a gentle cleanser to wash your face and pat it dry.
  • Apply: Put a pea-sized amount of retinol on your face, avoiding your eyes, nose, and mouth. You can use a quadrant system to apply it to your forehead, cheeks, and chin. Gently rub it in until it’s no longer visible.
  • Moisturize: Finish with a noncomedogenic moisturizer.
  • Start slowly: For the first couple of weeks, apply retinol every other day. You can also try the 1-2-3 rule: apply retinol once a week for one week, twice a week for two weeks, and three times a week for three weeks.
  • Protect: Use sunscreen every day because retinol can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.
  • Be patient: Side effects like flaking, redness, or sensitivity are temporary and a sign that your skin cell turnover is increasing.
  • Cycle: If you’re using retinol at night, you can try skin cycling, which involves alternating between exfoliating and hydrating products.
